Here are some of the more basic questions we were asked by people who were looking for help with sex during some of our recent consultations.

My penis is bent when erect. Is this normal?

In most cases yes, this is normal. 25 per cent of all penises have some degree of curvature or bending of the shaft. This can be to the left, right, up or even down. So no, there is nothing either unusual or abnormal about it. If you watch adult movies you will notice guys with curvature every now and then. Even John Holmes' large appendage had a noticeable curvature to one side and he made hundreds of adult movies. Also famously even Bill Clinton is said to curve. If you are experiencing pain or are unable to have intercourse because of a more severe curvature then you should seek the assistance of your doctor. In very rare cases a condition can develop called Peyronie's Syndrome. Peyronie's Syndrome or Disease is a problem that is thought to arise from damage to the penis and is a build up of scar tissue, or plaque, causing a hard lump either on the top or lower side of the penis in the tunica albuginea, the sheath that surrounds the two corpora cavernosa within the penis. The result is the stunting and bending of the penis at the area of scarring when erect. If you think this may be the case with you, arrange to see your doctor.

My balls ache. Is this normal?

It is normal to feel mild aching from time to time especially after a heavy sex session or heavy sexual foreplay. This is often called "blue balls" and is the result of a prolonged erection effectively cutting off blood and fluid supply to the genital area. It is not normal though to experience continued aching or pain. There can be any number of reasons why your balls may ache or cause you pain. The obvious course of action is to go and see your doctor and discuss it with him if you are concerned about any pain in the testicles. One particular condition, epididymitis, can result in quite severe pain. Epididymitis is a medical condition in which the epididymis, the tightly coiled tubes between the testes and the vas deferens that carries and stores sperm, become inflamed through bacterial infection, perhaps from an STD or STI. This can result in mild to severe pain in the testicles and groin area. Antibiotics may be needed in this case.

What does the term cunnilingus mean?

Cunnilingus is the technical term for oral sex or stimulation performed on a woman's pussy, clitoris, vaginal lips and the genital area in general. It can be between a man and a woman or even between two women. In basic terms it involves using the lips, tongue and mouth area to perform stimulation on the female genital area. Will my wife/girlfriend's sex drive decrease after menopause?

Age does not effect the female libido or orgasm potential. Most women over the age of 50 stay interested in sex, have little or no reduction in orgasm potential and can continue to have multiple orgasms if they were able to achieve this before. Vaginal dryness is a more common condition post-menopause and there are several remedies available. Ask your partner to seek medical advice.

What is meant by sexual fetishes?

This is a good question because many people have different understandings of what sexual fetishes are and are about. In traditional medical and psychology terms a fetish is considered a paraphilia or a sexual psychological disorder. Fetishism in medical terms is the fixation on an inanimate object or a body part. But most people today in common language do not use the term fetish, fetishism or sexual fetishes in this strict medical interpretation. The terms tends to be used more loosely to refer to any form of sexual arousal and satisfaction through anything that is other than normal. But what is normal? Again, what is normal is subject to individual interpretation. Commonly considered fetishes include, feet, shoes, uniforms, stocking, leather, rubber and so on. In common language one could also be considered to have a fetish for something that is not inanimate. Such as to have an anal fixation or anal fetish. A fetish towards something really can be any form of sexual stimulation by anything slightly unusual.

Does your health affect your sexual performance and drive?

Yes it can. If you are fit and healthy with a good balanced diet you are more likely to be able to perform better sexually. Poor diet and poor health directly relate to sexual performance. Increased exercise has been shown many times to increase sexual activity. I suggest you read some mens health books or take our workshop for more specific advice in relation to your own case.
